If merit raises are doled out on a whim or there isn’t a clear idea of how to outperform and get the raise, employees will be left confused, angry and, ultimately, less productive.   Merit, however, has a dark side — and this dark side is profoundly illuminated by Daniel Markovits in his new book, The Meritocracy Trap: How America’s Foundational Myth Feeds Inequality.

Merit rating is concerned with employee appraisal. It is a systematic and impartial procedural for determining the excellence with which an individual is performing a job. Kimball and Kimball define merit rating as “the evaluation of any given worker as his fitness for a given job in term of assigned factors by which he may be intelligently. Merit pay plans may create problems in employee relationships, problems in morale related to jealousy, fear, favoritism, undesirable competition, and job insecurity. Merit programs tend to develop divisive and competitive attitudes rather than cooperation among employees. Merit rating places employees in a competitive position for salary increases.
